MSDC is exploiting novel molecular targets to develop new therapies for metabolic diseases associated with altered mitochondrial function, especially insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. MSDCs founders have identified a novel molecular target of insulin sensitizers that selectively modulates mitochondrial control of certain metabolic-signaling and nutrient-sensing pathways resulting in improved insulin action. Exploiting this knowledge, the company is developing a new mechanistic class of oral insulin sensitizers that improve insulin action, as well as improve lipid profiles, increase brown fat, and preserve β-cells. The companys pioneer and lead products, MSDC-0160 and MSDC-0602, are in Phase 2 clinical studies. Long term, MSDCs hope is to prevent diabetes, and more broadly, positively impact diseases of the Metabolic Syndrome the cluster of factors known to predispose individuals to heart attacks and strokes. |
